Describes the European intellectual environment at the beginning of the 20th century that prompted Max Weber to adamantly defend his connection between the Protestant ethic & the rise of capitalism, focusing on Felix Rachfahl's & Ernst Troeltsch's debate in the German philosophical discourse. Rachfahl's criticism centered on the history of capitalism & disagreed with Weber's claim that Protestantism preceded capitalism. Rachfahl used the case of Holland to argue that modern capitalism was already established before the Reformation. Troeltsch accepted but downplayed Weber's connection between Protestantism & capitalism while arguing for the impact of secular social contracts, sociopolitical revolutions, & Catholic groups throughout Europe from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
